Continue Cesar’s dream

Forty-eight years ago on his birthday, March 31, Cesar Chavez founded the United Farm Workers--the first successful farm workers union in American history. He led strikes, marches and boycotts. He fasted. He pushed through the first state law in the nation granting farm workers the right to organize and bargain with their employers. He led the UFW to victory in union elections. He negotiated the first union contracts between growers and farm workers, contracts that provided farm workers with gains that were unimaginable only a short time before.

Cesar inspired farm workers and millions of people who never worked on a farm to commit themselves to social, economic and civil rights activism. Cesar was a genuine American hero--a role model for all Americans and for generations to come. As we approach Cesar's March 31st birthday, a holiday in 8 states, we have the chance to celebrate his life and accomplishments--an even more an opportunity to continue his dream.

Continue the Tradition

Cesar always said that his life's work would have been in vain if the union did not survive his death. There is still much that needs to be done to complete the work Cesar began.
