It is fitting that the author of our new overtime law for farm workers, Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez, was born on September 16th. This historical day is the 54th anniversary of the founding of UFW. It is also Mexican Independence Day and the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. How appropriate it is to celebrate this Latino leader’s birthday on this day.
Tuesday night, farm workers from Central Valley, the Central Coast, Stockton and in Sonoma and Ventura counties attended gatherings at local offices to celebrate Gov. Brown signing overtime into law. At these celebrations they signed oversized cards and banners wishing Assemblymember Gonzalez a happy birthday.
Join farm workers in reaching out to Assemblymember Gonzalez and wishing her a happy birthday and at the same time thanking her for the exemplary leadership and perseverance she showed every step of the way to ensure California farm workers will finally win fair overtime, after being excluded for more than three quarters of a century.
