Tell your store about Giumarra’s abuses
We’ve come to you before about Giumarra—the nations’ largest table grape grower. Last week we were able to give a strong message to Giumarra thanks to more than 16,000 of our supporters signing a petition. It condemns Giumarra for the alleged sexual harassment of a 17-year old girl.
This huge conglomerate accepted the petition and said they’d release a statement to the media after they reviewed the petition, but did not promise any action to ensure this could not happen again.
The workers need more than words. This is why we’re asking you to go to your local supermarket and take this downloadable flier to the produce manager.
The grocery industry is in a special position to raise the bar when it comes to how our food is produced. Consumer pressure has already led grocery stores to include more organic options, sustainable seafood, and fair trade options. As people take more and more interest in where their food comes from, the grocery industry reacts.
Please help apply this pressure to help the Giumarra workers. Stories like this one from Julio Hernandez, who has worked for Giumarra for 25 years, just should not exist.
The shade is for the grapes, not the workers? This indifference is unacceptable.
The grape season has begun and workers are already coming to us with stories of mistreatment and illegal misconduct including: not being paid for all hours of work or all the hours they are required to be on the jobsite, not being paid minimum wage when working piece rate, and being required to pay for their own tools.
You can help make this stop.
