Wegmans: Tell Giumarra to be responsible

For the past year, tens of thousands of UFW supporters have been taking action to keep agro-industrial giant, Giumarra Farms, accountable. As many are aware, Giumarra with their Nature’s Partner label, is a company whose record includes two farm worker heat deaths, a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by the federal government on behalf of a 17 year old girl who was fired for speaking out against the misconduct, a class action lawsuit alleging the company’s failure to pay workers wages they legitimately earned, and multiple violations of pesticide-use regulations.

With the start of the grape harvest, now is the time to ask those best in the position to hold Giumarra accountable—namely, the company’s buyers—to step up their efforts to do so. Please send Wegmans, a purchaser of Giumarra’s Nature’s Partner produce, a clear message telling them you expect them to behave in a socially responsible manner by demanding higher standards from their suppliers.

Wegmans is an East Coast regional supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Northern Virginia, and Maryland. CEO Danny Wegman says the company embraces “caring, respect, empowerment, high standards, and making a difference in the community.” The practices used out at Giumarra Farms are in no way aligned with such values.

We can see how consumer pressure has already led grocery stores to include more organic options, sustainable seafood, and fair trade options. As people take more and more interest in where their food comes from, the grocery industry must respond to this. Let’s make sure that farm worker justice is high up on the radar of industry leaders such as Wegmans.

Please join us in speaking out and send a message to Wegmans today. Click on the "participate button" on the top right.
